'The most significant and by far largest collections of Zaydi manuscripts are housed by the many public and private libraries of Yemen, an endangered cultural heritage tradition, currently at risk due to the conflict and warfare in Yemen.
The contributions brought together in this volume address a wide spectrum of aspects concerning Yemeni manuscript cultures, with some focusing on their history and present state within Yemen and others discussing the collections of manuscripts of Yemeni provenance in Europe and elsewhere.'
Jan Thiele's contribution is devoted to Eduard Glaser's personal NACHLASS (estate) preserved in the Regional Museum of K. A. Polanek, Žatec, the State District Archives, Louny and the Náprstek Museum, Prague. It highlights correspondence the explorer maintained with eminent scholars of his time such as Wilhelm Ahlwardt (1828-1909), professor of Oriental languages at the University of Greifswald or Hartwig Derenbourg (1844-1908), professor at École Spéciale des Langues Orientales (today Institut National des Langues et Civilisations Orientales - INALCO) and later at École Pratique des Hautes Études.
Special mention is also made of Glaser's correspondence with Giuseppe Caprotti (1862-1919), an Italian merchant who had been a resident in Ṣanʿāʾ for more than 30 years from 1885 and who - like Eduard Glaser - devoted himself to the collection of Arabic manuscripts.
