This book deals with the bequest by the Italian Arabist Eugenio Griffini (1878-1925) to the Ambrosiana Library in Milan and features a catalogue of books and Arabic manuscripts he bequeathed to the 'Ambrosiana'.
The Italian merchant Giuseppe Caprotti (1862–1919), who had settled in Ṣanʿāʾ together with his brother Luigi (1858-1889) in 1885, was a host to many European travellers in Yemen, including Eduard Glaser. (see p. XI) Like Eduard Glaser, Giuseppe Caprotti devoted himself to the collection of Arabic manuscripts. During his more than 30 years of residence in Yemen, Caprotti managed to bring together some 1,790 manuscripts. 157 of those manuscripts were sold to the' Königliche Hof- and Staatsbibliothek zu München' (Royal Court and State Library) (today's 'Bayrische Staatsbibliothek' - Bavarian State Library) through the mediation of Eduard Glaser.
The remaining Caprotti Collection was acquired by the 'Ambrosiana' after a long process of donations made by private collectors such as Luca Beltrami and Eugenio Griffini. In 1897, in the wake of his introduction to Giuseppe Caprotti, the young Eugenio Griffini also met Eduard Glaser in Milan who invited him to stay with him in Munich. (p. XI)
The 18-year-old student gladly accepted the invitation and was thus able to study the rich epigraphic material collected by Glaser. However, the latter's 'the flattering proposals' to convince Griffini to complete his Arabic studies and travel with him, could not dissuade him from his plans to graduate from high school and then attend university to obtain a degree in law.
